For the Fed, that adds even more restraint on its ability to cut interest rates this year, and futures markets now expect only one rate cut in December. Investors aren't anticipating healthcare funding to surge to anything resembling 2021 levels this year, and fewer deals could mean shutdowns for many companies running low on cash. Multiple healthcare startups have announced raises this year at Series B and beyond. Investors said there's now a higher bar for which startups get venture funding compared to 2021, however. Exits and shutdowns aheadWhile a number of biotech startups have jumped into the public markets already this year, the IPO window for healthcare startups has remained firmly shut. Still, many investors are optimistic that a few healthcare startups will test the waters later this year.

CNN —Jannik Sinner overcame a two-set deficit to defeat Russia’s Daniil Medvedev 3-6 3-6 6-4 6-4 6-3 in a thrilling five-set final and claim the men’s Australian Open title on Sunday, becoming the first Italian man to win a grand slam since 1976. The 22-year-old’s remarkable comeback capped off a special tournament for Sinner, one in which he had defeated world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the semifinals on route to his first-ever grand slam final and ended with his maiden major title. For Medvedev, it was a cruel echo of the 2022 Australian Open final he lost to Rafael Nadal when he had once again let a two-set lead slip. Following his defeat against Sinner, the 27-year-old made some unwanted history by becoming the first player in the Open Era to lose multiple grand slam finals in such fashion.

Federal student loan borrowers who initially took out smaller loan amounts may be eligible for debt cancellation sooner than they anticipated. The SAVE plan, which reduces payments for millions of borrowers, opened for enrollment last August. But some of its benefits, like the shortened path to forgiveness, were not set to take effect until July 2024. SAVE cuts that term by half for people who initially borrowed $12,000 or less and reduces the repayment timeline for those who originally borrowed $21,000 or less. For example, if someone originally borrowed $13,000 in loans, any remaining balance would be forgiven after 11 years of payments.

Workers at Ford voted 69.3% in favor of the pact, which passed with nearly a 15,000-vote margin in balloting that ended early Saturday. Earlier this week, GM workers narrowly approved a similar contract. They also agreed in principle to bring new electric-vehicle battery plants into the national union contract. This provision will give the UAW an opportunity to unionize the EV battery plants plants, which will represent a rising share of industry jobs in the years ahead. Contracts with the auto companies should also lead to higher wages at auto-parts supply companies and in other industries, Wheaton said.

Over the second half of last year, just 16 investments were made by Israeli institutional investors - four of those being early stage seed deals. But institutional investors have not been a big part of its success, with most investment coming from venture capital funds. Led by mostly foreign VCs, Israeli tech firms raised some $15 billion in 2022. Nimrod Vromen, chief executive of Consiglieri, said that institutions last year had more inclination for early stage investments. "Israeli institutional investors’ experience in early stage investments, combined with the Israeli government’s commitment to supporting the startup ecosystem amidst political legislative turbulence, signals potential for future investment growth," he said.

Investors are questioning the health of the commercial real estate sector following a string of recent banking crises. Britain's unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 3.9% in the three months to March as more people sought to get back into the jobs market, potentially easing concerns at the Bank of England about inflation pressures. Economists polled by Reuters had expected the rate to hold at 3.8%. However, pay growth - which is at the heart of the BoE's debate about whether to raise interest rates further - remained strong by historical standards. Annual pay growth including bonuses held at 5.8%, as expected in the Reuters poll.

LONDON, May 16 (Reuters) - Britain's unemployment rate unexpectedly rose to 3.9% in the three months to March as more people sought to get back into the jobs market, potentially easing concerns at the Bank of England about inflation pressures. Wells Fargo is a multiyear turnaround story, encompassing cost-cutting strategies to please investors and improvements to risk-management operations to satisfy both regulators and investors. Both stocks were firmly in the red Tuesday, with Wells Fargo sinking below $37 per share and Morgan Stanley below $85 per share. In the short run, that decreases the likelihood that shares of Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley will rip higher. That's especially true for Wells Fargo, knowing that CEO Charlie Scharf can execute additional restructurings to reduce expenses. TAIPEI, March 23 (Reuters) - Taiwan sees China's involvement in Honduras' decision to seek to end relations with the island as very obvious and the situation does not look good with Honduras demanding a "high price", the island's foreign minister said on Thursday. Honduras denied on Wednesday it had demanded $2.5 billion in aid from Taiwan before its announcement to seek to open relations with China, instead saying the country had repeatedly requested Taiwan buy Honduran public debt. read moreSpeaking to reporters at parliament, Taiwan Foreign Minister Joseph Wu said the situation with Honduras was "not very good". Honduras Foreign Minister Eduardo Enrique Reina said last week Honduras' decision was partly because the Central American country was "up to its neck" in financial challenges and debt - including $600 million it owes Taiwan. Wu, answering a lawmaker question, said Honduras did not just owe Taiwan money.
South Africa typically accounts for more than 70% of the world's platinum mining supply, according to UBS, but the process has been restricted by the country's deepening power crisis. There will be some recovery in the recycled platinum supply in 2023, but the amount will remain below pre-pandemic levels, the WPIC estimates. Global automotive demand for platinum is expected to increase by 10% in 2023 to 3.246 million ounces, according to the WPIC. Jewelry is "probably the area of greatest uncertainty" when it comes to platinum demand, Sterck told CNBC, but it is a relatively small component in the picture. Industrial demand for platinum will increase by 12% year-on-year in 2023, according to the WPIC, with platinum usage in the glass and medical industries, in particular, expected to increase.
